People who are familiar with Whistler will know that it is a “dog town”. No matter whether you are walking down the Village stroll or you are cross-country skiing, people love to take their furry friends everywhere. Whistler is definitely dog friendly, and traveling with a pet to Whistler should not be a stressful event.
I used to go on a quick Whistler getaway by myself, but this time I decided to give it a try and take my dog Tammy with me. Being a Border Collie – Jack Russel mix she is full of energy and enjoys the great outdoors. I chose the Summit Lodge as my accommodation, because I heard a lot of good things about the lodge and the rates were great keeping in mind that I went for two nights on a busy weekend in February. The reservation process through the EnjoyWhistler.com team was easy and I got an amazing package price for ski rentals, lift tickets and accommodation. The Summit Lodge is dog friendly, they don’t charge for pets and have pet amenities like beds and bowls available for your best friend.
When I arrived at the front desk the staff gave me a warm welcome, but what made my heart melt was to see Tammy’s name on a welcome board. She got cuddled and treated like a princess by the staff and enjoyed a treat while I got the room keys.
We stayed in a Studio Deluxe room. The room is about 340sqft large, had a queen bed, a kitchenette, balcony, fireplace and nice sitting as well as dining area. Tammy’s doggy bed and food bowls were waiting in the room as well. The room was very charming with natural colors and comfortable furniture. The lodge has also One Bedroom Suites available which are perfect for a family that needs more space. With its 610sqft it offers a separate bedroom with a king size bed and a queen size sofabed in the living room. The same amenities await you in this category like fireplace and private balcony.
The third category is the Executive Studio King. Similar to the Deluxe Studio the room offers a kitchenette, Taman Sari Spa bath amenities, complimentary high speed internet access and flat-screen tv, but this room is about 100sqft larger than the normal Deluxe Studio category with a great layout.
I enjoyed a relaxing bath in the soaking tub before I got ready to meet my friend at Elements Urban Tapas, which is connected to the Summit Lodge. I called the front desk a few days earlier and arranged a dog sitter for Tammy. Although I know that my dog is quiet when I’m not around I also know the rules and a dog is not allowed to be left alone unsupervised in a hotel room.
On my way to Elements Urban Tapas bar I walked past the 855sqft function space that the Summit Lodge has to offer for groups or bigger celebrations. Catering service for breakfast, lunch and dinner can be arranged in this with natural light flooded space.
Elements has always been one of my favorite places in Whistler for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Lots of locals can be found her enjoying dishes like Eggs Rockefeller (Two poached eggs served over creamed spinach and swiss cheese topped with hollandaise and choice of toast), Tiger Prawn Chorizo Linguine or Stuffed Pork Loin (10 oz bone-in centre cut chop, with pine nut, apricot stuffing, accented with apple cider demi, with garlic mash and seasonal vegetables) for an affordable price. After a long evening I found my dog happy in her fluffy bed wagging her tail while I released the friendly pet sitter.
Before I checked out in the morning I had to visit the heated outdoor pool, hot tub and the Taman Sari Heritage Spa at the Summit Lodge. The spa offers from traditional royal Balinese massages to regenerating facials, relaxing pedicures and luxurious manicures. Different than in at hotels in Whistler the pool area is nestled in a quiet area behind the building with a small park next to it.
Tammy and I enjoyed our stay a lot and while I took care of the checkout formalities she enjoyed a last good cuddle from the amazing staff at the Summit Lodge. I wished I could have had some more time to go skiing and use their private ski shuttle for their guests to the lifts as well as the ski valet, but I know I will be back soon and Tammy too. No matter whether traveling with a pet to Whistler or without, as a group, by yourself or with the whole family the Summit Lodge is the perfect place to stay in Whistler!
