IT’S PATIO SEASON IN WHISTLER!
You hear it all the time in Whistler from the locals – they came for the winter and ended up staying for the summer. Located just 1.5 hours from Vancouver, BC, Whistler is an outdoor lovers paradise in the summertime. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast after activities such as mountain biking, rafting or hiking, or someone who just wants to getaway and relax, Whistler is the place for you. Regardless of your intentions, the one thing that all visitors to Whistler must do when in resort is to experience the summer mountain air on one of Whistler’s most spectacular patios. The team at EnjoyWhistler.com has put together a Top Ten List highlighting Whistler’s best establishments for soaking up the sun, people watching and having a bite (or sip) or two:
Mallard Lounge and Terrace
Always a top pick for best lounge in the winter time, the Mallard Lounge and Terrace is a true gem in the summer. Located in the Fairmont Chateau Whistler at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, the Mallard Lounge and Terrace is very well known by the hotel guests and locals for Fairmont Fridays (for the twitter users that’s #FairmontFridays). Sit back and enjoy the mountain view from the lounge in this 5 star hotel and enjoy $5 drink specials (including wine), $5 plates of appetizers to order as well as passed complimentary appetizers for guests. Live music complements the experience – a must do on a Friday in Whistler!
Located in the Main Village attached to the Listel Hotel, the Bearfoot is well known for it’s fine dining, champagne sabering and vodka tasting experiences. Always top of class in Whistler for their dining experience at the hands of chef Melissa Craig, it is no surprise that they made our list of top ten outdoor summer patios this summer. Enjoy the late afternoon sun and a plate full of fresh oysters for just $9.99. Yum!
How could Whistler’s Best Patio and Best People watching restaurant as voted by the Pique Newsmagazine year after year not make our list? Located in the heart of Whistler Village is Citta’s, a legendary establishment serving up beers and burgers for the past 25 years. If you want to be right in the hub of things, this is the place to go.
A great secret in Whistler known well by locals and golfers is the Den at Nicklaus North, Whistler’s largest lakeside patio. Enjoy yourself on the 4000 foot patio while gazing out over the glacier fed Green Lake. Added excitement comes from the 16th hole as well as the float plane dock on the edge of the lake. The cuisine consists of contemporary country club favourites, made with locally sourced fresh ingredients, and the bar is proud to promote Whistler’s Best Prices on their beer and wine selection.
Cure Lounge and Patio
Located in Creekside, Cure Lounge and Patio at the Nita Lake Lodge made our list not only for the great food and drink, but because the patio offers a great view of the lake and valley trail – perfect for watching the wind blow and the tourists go by via foot, bike or rollerblade. It is also a great destination stop for those lake hopping on a hot summer day. And while you are there, check out Fix Cafe and treat yourself to one of their hand made ice cream cones. A great stop when cruising from Alta Lake to Alpha Lake!
Aubergine Grill and Firerock Lounge
Whistler’s best kept secret located right in the heart of the village in the beautiful Westin Resort and Spa is the Aubergine Grill. What makes this patio fabulous is that it is large and faces into the sunset. If you are looking for somewhere to get the last rays of the day, this is the place for you. Warm sun, warm breeze and you can have some fun watching the folks at the Whistler Golf Club driving range below.
Slightly removed from the heart of the village, yet close to the village park and Olympic Plaza is the Brewhouse. On a sunny day, this patio is always packed and is fully basked in sunshine. As expected with most pubs, the burgers and beer are outstanding, as is the people watching from this cobblestone-side establishment.
Another award winning establishment is the GLC, located at the base of Whistler Mountain next to the Gondola. Awarded North America’s Best Mountain Bar by Skiing Magazine, the patio at GLC makes our list due to it’s proximity to the mountain bike park – epic performances and sometimes epic bails can be seen from your table, providing hours of entertainment (not to mention the food and drink to go along with it). On a sunny day, grab a seat and have some fun!
One word – location, location, location. Nestled in the Sundial Boutique Hotel, Black’s is located at the base of Whistler mountain and provides a sunny patio with a direct view of the mountain bike park and zip trek training ground. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner, and enjoy the people and bike watching experience.
Palmer’s Gallery Bar and Grill
Located at Whistler Golf Club is Palmer’s Gallery Bar and Grill. With 100 seats on the patio overlooking the 18th green, it’s a great place to hang out and while away the day. This place makes our list for it’s outstanding outdoor bar and barbecue – perfect for a summer afternoon! Located just across the highway from the main Whistler Village and Village North, it is easy to get to yet slightly removed from the crowds.
Whistler is so well known as North America’s Premier ski destination and now more and more people are discovering how amazing it is in the summer time, too. With so much to do ranging from outdoor sports such as mountain biking, rafting, zip lining, hiking and atving, to more relaxed activities such as spending some time at the spa, lazing by the lakes, dining al fresco in the middle of the pedestrian only village or just hanging out with friends, Whistler is an incredible destination for your summer getaway.
